The Angels activated centerfielder Mike Trout to bat second and play center on Friday for the first time since he was pulled from a game with back spasms on July 12.
Trout was eventually diagnosed with T5 costovertebral dysfunction, a treatable joint inflammation issue that many initially feared would threaten his career.
The three-time MVP went 1-4 with a single in his return and the Angels, who went 14-18 without Trout, won 1-0.
The 30-year-old received a cortisone injection on July 21 which Trout said his body took to quickly.
Trout also said that he will have to manage the condition going forward which the Pro Baseball Docs opined will likely involve more games as the Angels' DH.
Los Angeles is 52-67, 24.5 games back of the Astros, 12 games back of the final AL Wild Card spot, and 25-48 since third baseman Anthony Rendon went to the IL with wrist inflammation on May 27.
Trout was in contention for the home run crown with 23 bombs through June but he followed with a .167 batting average in 10 games in July, hitting one home run with four RBI and a strikeout rate over 46%.

Mike Trout's single left the bat at 112.4 mph. I think he's OK.
