A day before the MLB All-Star Game, the Angels placed star center fielder Mike Trout on the 10-day IL with left ribcage inflammation.
Trout is eligible to return on Friday, but there is slight concern he will need longer than that to get fully healthy, according to the Pro Baseball Docs.
The 30 year old left Tuesday's game with upper back spasms, then underwent an MRI and a CT scan on his back – which both came back clean.
Trout told reporters he had been dealing with some back discomfort for roughly a week before that, but was getting daily treatment.
Initially, the Pro Baseball Docs were optimistic he could avoid IL because upper back spasms are typically easier to recover from than lower back spasms.
Monday's placement on the IL is the first time the team mentioned anything about his ribcage.
The ribcage inflammation is related to the upper back spasms, but should not reoccur once the swelling subsides, according to the Pro Baseball Docs.
Anaheim may play it cautious with the All-Star outfielder, as they currently sit 10.5 games out of the top Wild Card spot in the American League.
Trout is hitting .270 with 24 home runs, 51 RBIs and 55 runs scored in 79 of the team's 92 games this season.
The 12th-year pro is +2000 for AL MVP, with teammate Shohei Ohtani at -105, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
Anaheim is +50000 to win the World Series.
