The Michigan State Spartans are getting off to a slow start (2-2) to start the 2022 college football season. An enormous reason for the .500 start is the large number of defensive injuries the team has had to overcome.
Starting defensive tackle Jacob Slade, a preseason All-American has missed time due to injury. He missed his second consecutive game against Minnesota on Saturday.
Starting defensive end Jeff Pietrowski missed last week’s game due to a lower leg injury. He didn’t warm up against Minnesota. Pietrowski suffered the injury against Washington and was in a boot after coming out of the locker room in the second half. His backup, Khris Bogle, also sustained an injury last week.
Defensive leaders Xavier Henderson and Darius Snow have suffered severe leg injuries. Henderson has been out indefinitely since Week 1, and Snow sustained a season-ending injury in the opening day game against Western Michigan.
The University of Maryland Terrapins (UMD) have been one of the biggest surprises in college football this year. They have been competitive in every game this season and came within a touchdown of tying the game against the #4 ranked Michigan Wolverines. But, in that game, they suffered injuries to their most highly recruited players.
Everyone knows Taulia Tagovailoa as the younger brother to Tua Tagovailoa. But, Taulia has been good in his own right, throwing for 1,102 yards and seven touchdowns in the team’s first four games this year and leading UMD to a 3-1 record. Though his fantastic season took a hit for the worst though last week:
Tagovailoa’s head coach Mike Locklsey had this to say about the injury, “With Lia battling a little bit of a knee, a little bit of a rib, a little banged up today, so probably won't know much until we get checked in there tomorrow, and then we'll have a better feel,” according to Jeff Ermann of 247 Sports. Tagovailoa’s availability for Saturday’s game is in question. But, he did return after the injury in their game last week versus Michigan.
Rakim Jarrett is a five-star prospect from the Washington D.C. area that decided to stay close to a home similar to another local former UMD player (Stefon Diggs). His career at UMD has been going great, leading the team with 829 yards last season. This season he’s gotten out to 196 yards in the first four games. But, he suffered a head injury in the team's loss to Michigan. His head coach said, "Rak obviously was ruled out, I think he hit his head on the turf, so we'll know more obviously when we get back.” He has been listed as a game-day decision going into this week. The UMD Terrapins will need their star quarterback and receiver to beat a struggling Michigan State Spartans.
