Saints' Michael Thomas Gets a Double-Digit SIC Score Upgrade

Michael Thomas - SIC score 77

Saints’ new head coach Dennis Allen said after a competitive joint practice with the Packers that wide receiver Michael Thomas will be ready to go “when the ball kicks off for real.”

Michael Thomas’ recovery over the course of the offseason has inspired confidence in the Pro Football Docs that he will be active for Week 1.

In May, our Pro Football Docs gave Thomas a SIC score of 59 for the season. Now, Thomas will begin the regular season with a score of 77.

Based on recent practice footage, Thomas’ surgically-repaired left ankle has made vast improvements since May, when he was running only straight-line sprints and didn't participate during OTAs.

The Pro Football Docs previously had serious concern that Thomas would start the season on the PUP list. He is beyond that hurdle barring any setbacks.

Still, he failed his entry physical into training camp because of lingering concerns about his left ankle.

Thomas appears to still favor his left side but he is able to plant and cut well on both feet, something he couldn't do only a few months ago.

The 29-year-old suffered a high ankle sprain in the 2020 season opener and played only seven games. Two subsequent surgeries in June and November 2021 kept him out for all of last season.

He isn't yet back to the pre-injury level – when set the NFL record for receptions and added 1,725 yards and nine touchdowns in 2019 – and will likely still need some games to re-acclimate to the speed of the game and develop a rapport with Jameis Winston.

Still, with over three weeks until the regular season starts, Thomas' SIC score could improve ahead of Week 1.
