Update (7/18/24) Both Chubb and Phillips have been placed on the PUP list to start training camp. Both players can be activated at any time.
In 2023 the Miami Dolphins pass rush suffered devastating injuries when both Jaelen Phillips and Bradley Chubb suffered season-ending injuries. Phillips suffered a ruptured Achilles in week 12 and Chubb tore his ACL in week 17 against the Ravens.
During the team’s OTAs and minicamp, both Phillips and Chubb were present but have not been cleared for on-field activities. In 2023, Phillips was on track to have his best professional season, recording 43 tackles and 6.5 sacks before his injury. Chubb also had an impressive season with 11 sacks, six forced fumbles, and 74 tackles.
According to Pro Football Docs, neither Phillips nor Chubb is expected to be fully recovered by the start of the season. Late-season injuries like these are particularly challenging for pass rushers, who depend heavily on explosiveness and agility. Even if they manage to return sooner than expected, it is unlikely they will be at full effectiveness.
In the offseason, the Dolphins signed veteran Shaq Barrett to fill in as a stopgap. The Dolphins lost Andrew Van Ginkel in free agency to the Minnesota Vikings.
