Mets ace Max Scherzer left Wednesday's start against the Cardinals in the sixth inning after his 87th pitch appeared to aggravate an injury.
The Mets have listed the injury as left side discomfort and said that Scherzer will undergo tests tomorrow. That verbiage commonly refers to oblique injuries.
Scherzer appeared to mouth the words "nope… i'm done” while motioning that he was done for the night after a pitch to Albert Pujols. Buck Showalter immediately came to the mound and walked away with Scherzer with the count at 2-1.
The ProBaseballDocs reviewed the video and didn't see any clear injury mechanisms on his final pitch, but after the game, Scherzer said that he “felt a zing” on his side after the throw.
Scherzer was scheduled to be the Mets' opening day starter, but had his start pushed back one day because he began feeling hamstring tightness leading up to the game.
He hasn't missed time this season because of the hamstring injury while posting a 2.54 ERA with 59 strikeouts in seven starts.
