University of Houston guard Marcus Sasser slipped and injured his groin during Saturday’s semifinals in the American Athletic Conference tournament.
Sasser is questionable for Sunday’s matchup against Memphis, but is unlikely to play given the quick turnaround.
While he will undoubtedly play in the NCAA tournament, the groin strain will limit him to a spot-up shooting role and likely reduce his minutes for at least the first few rounds, according to the Pro Basketball Docs.
Sasser is also a key defender for the Cougars, but the groin strain will make it tough to slide laterally and defend with his usual ability.
The 22-year-old from Dallas leads the team in points (17.1), steals (1.7) and three-point field goals made per game (2.6). He will likely have to play off the ball more during the tournament given his limited ability to burst past a defender, but he can still be effective shooting the ball.
Houston (31-2) is poised for a deep run in the NCAA tournament, but will have to rework its offense slightly to adjust for the Sasser injury. Junior guard Jamal Shead (5.5 assists per game) will likely see a bigger role handling the ball.
The Cougars are the favorite to win the NCAA tournament at +550, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

Here's how UH senior guard Marcus Sasser injured himself during the first half. Non-contact injury, appears to have just slipped. Groin injury, questionable to return. @KHOU
