Luka Dončić remains unlikely to return during the Lakers’ first-round playoff series against the Rockets as he continues to recover from a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. Pro Football Doc has maintained that Dončić’s earliest realistic return would be Round 2, and even that timeline depends on how he progresses in basketball activity.
Luka Dončić Hamstring Injury
Dončić sat out four games in February leading up to All-Star Weekend because of a left hamstring strain and made a limited appearance in the All-Star Game while still rehabbing the injury.
On April 2 against the Thunder, Dončić reaggravated the same left hamstring strain and underwent an MRI that revealed a Grade 2 hamstring strain. The Lakers ruled out Dončić for the remainder of the regular season.
He traveled to Europe days after the diagnosis and reportedly underwent stem cell therapy. Dončić returned to Los Angeles before the playoffs and has been working with the Lakers’ medical staff since.
Pro Football Doc Medical Analysis
Pro Football Doc said Dončić would miss the entire first round of the Lakers’ playoff series, regardless of how long the series lasted.
“Round 2 at best,” Pro Football Doc said. “I’m not saying Game 1 of Round 2. I’m saying Round 2 at best. Is it early Round 2 or late Round 2? That remains to be seen.”
“If you return a game too early and there’s a setback, you’re now out for the rest of the playoffs,” he said.
Return Timeline
Dončić is almost certain not to return in the Lakers’ first-round series against the Rockets. He has not yet been cleared to fully resume basketball activities.
This week, Lakers coach JJ Redick said Dončić has begun movement on the court as he continues to rehab his left hamstring strain.
“Most of his stuff before had been standstill,” Redick said.
Pro Football Doc’s original timeline was a four- to six-week recovery. Based on the current information, Dončić appears on track for a potential second-round return against the Thunder if the Lakers advance.
Bottom Line
Dončić remains on track for a potential second-round return, but there is still no guarantee he will be ready for Game 1 if the Lakers advance. A Grade 2 hamstring strain carries a real setback risk, especially for a player who needs burst, deceleration, and change-of-direction ability.
The Lakers took a 3-0 series lead against the Rockets without Dončić and Austin Reaves, but Houston has won the past two games to force Game 6. Reaves returned in Game 5 from an oblique strain.
