The Los Angeles Lakers have confirmed that LeBron James will miss the beginning of the 2025-26 NBA season due to a right-sided sciatica issue. A re-evaluation is scheduled for 3 to 4 weeks. The injury has already kept him out of training camp and the first two preseason games, and he will miss the season opener, and likely even more time beyond that. According to the Lakers’ medical staff and reporting from ESPN, the issue is characterized as nerve irritation in the glute region, radiating along the typical path of the sciatic nerve. Due to the uncertainty surrounding nerve injuries, the 3–4 week window is merely an estimate, not a guaranteed timeline for recovery.
While this appears to be a new presentation of sciatica on his right side, it is not the first time LeBron has had to manage issues in his lower back, spine, and related regions. In 2015, James received two anti-inflammatory injections to address lower back disc irritation and related symptoms, missing multiple games and even preseason time.
Can You Play Basketball With Sciatica - Understanding & What It Means for Elite Athletes
Sciatica is a symptom rather than an isolated diagnosis. It usually occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower spine through the glutes and into the legs, becomes compressed, pinched, or irritated. Common causes include herniated discs, bone spurs, spinal stenosis, or muscular tightness that puts pressure on or irritates the nerve root.
Sciatica introduces a different challenge for James as this is a nerve element rather than pure musculature or joint stress. Even for a seasoned veteran like him, nerve irritation may respond less predictably to rest and therapy. The team will likely adopt a conservative, phased approach.
In elite athletes, sciatica can be particularly troublesome because it may not simply resolve with rest. The demands of training, including explosive movements, directional changes, and load on the spine, make rehabilitative management more delicate.
For the Lakers, starting the season without their primary star LeBron on the court presents an opportunity to jumpstart chemistry without him, test the depth of their bench, and minimize the risk of injuries by gradually increasing his playing time. This situation may also serve as another test of LeBron’s durability, reminding everyone that even at his exceptional level, the body has limits and requires careful management. For now, the league will patiently observe whether LeBron James can continue to defy history or if this sciatic flare becomes another challenging chapter in his late-career journey.
