Kiki Rice's Breakout Rookie Season Put on Hold by Grade 2 Ankle Sprain
The Toronto Tempo received unfortunate news this week as rookie guard Kiki Rice was diagnosed with a Grade 2 ankle sprain. According to ProFootballDoc, the injury is expected to sideline Rice for multiple weeks, dealing a significant blow to both Toronto's backcourt and one of the early frontrunners in the WNBA Rookie of the Year race.
The timing is particularly disappointing given how impressive Rice has been through the opening stretch of her professional career. The No. 6 overall pick out of UCLA has quickly emerged as one of the league's most productive rookies, averaging 12.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists while shooting an outstanding 55.9 percent from the field and 45 percent from three-point range. She entered the injury as the second-leading scorer among WNBA rookies and had become a key piece of Toronto's rotation.
A Grade 2 ankle sprain involves a partial ligament tear and typically causes significant swelling, pain, and instability. For a player like Rice, whose game is built on attacking the basket, changing directions, and defending multiple positions, the injury will require a cautious rehabilitation process. While the prognosis is generally favorable, returning before the ankle regains full strength and stability can increase the risk of aggravation or recurring issues.
Rice's absence leaves a sizeable void for an expansion Toronto team that has exceeded expectations early in the season. Beyond her scoring production, she has provided poise, efficiency, and versatility well beyond her years, earning praise as one of the WNBA's most impactful rookies. The good news is that Grade 2 ankle sprains are not typically long-term injuries, but Toronto will likely take a conservative approach to ensure one of its foundational young players is fully healthy before returning to action.
