Kentucky’s Deone Walker Dealing with Back Injury Heading into NFL Rookie Season

NFL Draft prospect Deone Walker, a standout defensive lineman from Kentucky, was revealed to have a stress fracture in his back during medical evaluations at the NFL Combine. The injury, likely a spondylolysis fracture, often results from overuse and is common in athletes who place high stress on the lower spine.

Spondylolysis is a type of spinal stress fracture that rarely fully heals, though it can become asymptomatic with proper rest and rehab. However, it carries a high risk of recurrence, especially for linemen who endure constant leverage and contact at the line of scrimmage. NFL fans may recall a similar case with Carson Wentz, whose spondylolysis began in high school and reappeared during his pro career. For a player like Walker, who relies on explosive power and leverage, managing such an injury this early in his career is a concerning development.

While Walker played through the injury during the 2024 college season, the discovery raises red flags about his long-term durability. His production saw a modest dip compared to previous years, possibly reflecting the hidden toll of the condition. Last season, Walker played in 11 games, totaling 37 tackles and 1.5 sacks. In 2023, he had 55 tackles and 7.5 sacks.

Despite the medical red flag, Walker is expected to participate in training camp and rookie minicamp drills this offseason. However, teams are likely to monitor him closely, given how prevalent and persistent back injuries can be for linemen. While many defensive and offensive linemen battle back issues during their careers, starting out with a known spinal condition presents added risk. Walker is projected to be a Day 2 draft pick, but his injury could cause him to slip further down the board.
