Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen appeared in a walking boot and on crutches during Joe Brady’s introductory press conference as the Bills’ new head coach, shedding light on a foot injury that required a recent procedure.

It was revealed that Allen suffered a fifth metatarsal fracture in his right foot. Allen said the injury was pre-existing and was re-aggravated during Buffalo’s game against the Cleveland Browns on Dec. 21. He later underwent a procedure to address the fracture.

According to Sports Injury Central’s Pro Football Doc, Dr. David Chao, the specific injury and treatment carry a favorable prognosis.

“Ironically, a fifth metatarsal avulsion fracture doesn’t actually get ‘fixed’ in the traditional sense,” Chao said. “The small fragment of bone is excised, and the peroneal brevis tendon is reattached. That resolves the problem because you don’t need that small chip of bone. This type of injury is distinctly different from a fifth metatarsal shaft fracture — commonly known as a Jones fracture — which requires a screw to be placed into the bone.”

Chao explained that the procedure differs significantly from the more serious Jones fracture, which often comes with longer recovery timelines and higher re-injury risk.

“In this case, the procedure isn’t about fixing the bone itself,” Chao said. “It’s about removing the bone fragment and reattaching the tendon, rather than stabilizing the bone with hardware like a Jones fracture. What’s the difference? The healing is quicker and far more reliable.”

Chao added that Allen’s recovery timeline should not impact his availability for next season.

“Josh Allen is going to be fine,” Chao said. “When will he be fine? Well ahead of training camp and well ahead of the offseason program wrapping up — roughly eight to twelve weeks with a reliable recovery timeline. The good news for Bills fans is there’s no concern heading into next season, despite the surgery revealed today.”

The Bills have indicated Allen’s offseason workload will be managed, but there is no expectation that the injury will affect his readiness for training camp or the start of the 2026 season.
