Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels made his long-awaited return in Week 15 against the Minnesota Vikings—but his comeback was short-lived. The second-year quarterback, who has already missed significant time this season with a dislocated left elbow suffered in Week 9, exited Sunday’s game after taking a violent hit while trying to stop an interception return.
Daniels was officially ruled questionable to return with a left elbow injury, raising new concerns about his elbow and whether Washington should keep him sidelined moving forward.
At Sports Injury Central (SICscore.com), we break down what happened, why the injury is concerning, and what this means for the Commanders’ season and Daniels’ development.
What Happened: Daniels Flattened After Costly Interception
Early in the second half, Daniels tried to spark a stagnant Washington offense that was shut out by Minnesota through two quarters. Instead, he threw a costly interception to Vikings linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel.
While hustling back to prevent a defensive touchdown, Daniels was flattened by defensive back Isaiah Rodgers, who was blocking on the return. The impact sent Daniels crashing to the turf, and he immediately clutched his left elbow—the same arm he injured in Week 9.
He stayed down briefly before jogging off and entering the blue medical tent. Minutes later, Washington ruled him questionable with a left elbow injury.
Backup quarterback Marcus Mariota replaced Daniels and threw an interception on his first drive.
Commanders’ Playoff Picture and Why Daniels Likely Sits
Washington entered Week 15 at 3–9, effectively outside the NFC playoff race. Daniels is the clear franchise future, and risking further injury in a lost season makes little sense.
Given:
His recent dislocation
The violent nature of the collision
The likelihood of swelling and soreness
The Commanders turning to Mariota quickly
It would not be surprising if Washington shuts him down again for the rest of the season.
Big Picture: Development Takes Priority
Daniels has shown flashes of promise but has struggled to stay healthy in his second NFL season. While the snaps would help his development, protecting the long-term franchise quarterback is the priority.
With Washington’s season effectively over, the Commanders are far more likely to play it safe for the remainder of this season.
