Why Mike McGlinchey's Previous Quad Injury Should Not Be a Concern This Season

Mike McGlinchey - 88 SIC Score

San Francisco 49ers’ right tackle Mike McGlinchey missed the final half of the 2021 season after tearing his right quadriceps tendon, marking the first time in his career he has missed significant time for injury.

Before this major injury, the fifth-year right tackle started in 52 of 56 games in his career.

He was given a 9-12 month recovery before he would be back at full strength, which our panel of Football Docs said at time of injury would be a tight timeline for next season. Right now, McGlinchey seems to be on track given that his 6-month rehab went well.

“My body feels great,” McGlinchey told reporters in April. “I've been able to train really hard and continue to increase volume and load and all that kind of stuff each week as it's gone on. The pain has subsided for the most part.”

McGlinchey enters this season with an 88 SIC Score, which our panel of Pro Football Docs expects will improve as he continues to progress and regain his strength as the season goes on.

Since entering the league in 2018 out of Notre Dame, McGlinchey has not dealt with many injuries. In 2019, he underwent a knee scope for unspecified reasons and only missed 4 games.

After being named to Pro Football Focus’ all-rookie team with a 73.2 overall grade in 2018, McGlinchey has struggled the last seasons. He has been a reliable pass-blocker with 90.2 PFF run grade in his first three seasons. However, he has struggled with pass-blocking.

His decreased effectiveness last season could have come as a result of lingering quad issues.

McGlinchey told reporters in April the quad issue was bothering him for a while, so he said he is confident surgery gave him “completely new quad tendon instead of the one with tendonitis.”

PFF currently ranks McGlinchey as the No. 31 offensive tackle ahead of the 2022 season.
