Fernando Tatis Jr. to Undergo Shoulder Surgery, Here's His Return Timeline

San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. told reporters Tuesday that he will get surgery to fix the damaged labrum in his left shoulder.
The surgery will keep him out roughly six months, according to the Pro Baseball Docs. Depending on when he undergoes the operation, that would allow him to return in late February or early March for spring training.
Players serving a PED suspension can participate in spring training, but Tatis will miss time at the beginning of next regular season as well. How many games depends on if the Padres make the postseason and how many postseason games they play.
Regardless, this is the longest time Tatis will have to recover. Participating in live spring training games will also shorten his ramp-up period when he is allowed to rejoin the team.
As the Pro Baseball Docs detailed when news of his suspension broke, it is a necessary and smart choice for him to return without any lingering health issues.
It is also a good step to show the team and his teammates that he’s taking responsibility.
Tatis subluxed his left shoulder five separate times in 2021, costing him 30 games in total.
He elected to rehab the muscles around his labrum in the offseason with the hope that would halt the issue.
The only way to fully ensure the labrum issue is behind him is through surgery, according to the Pro Baseball Docs.
