Philadelphia Eagles running back Kenneth Gainwell suffered a concussion during the NFC Championship Game against the Washington Commanders.
Gainwell suffered a hit to the head while blocking on the opening kickoff of the second half. Prior to exiting Gainwell had logged three carries and two catches.
In his absence, rookie Will Shipley stepped in as the backup to Saquon Barkley, delivering an impressive performance with 77 yards and a touchdown on four carries.
Throughout his NFL career, Gainwell has been relatively durable, with no significant injury history prior to this concussion. His consistent availability has been a valuable asset to the Eagles' backfield depth.
With two weeks between the NFC Championship and the Super Bowl, Gainwell has an extended window to clear the NFL's concussion protocol. Recovery times for concussions can vary, and while some players return within a week, others may require more time. As of now, Gainwell is listed as questionable for the Super Bowl however we are confident he will play in the Super Bowl.
If Gainwell is unable to play, the Eagles are expected to rely on Saquon Barkley as the primary running back, with Will Shipley serving as the backup. Barkley has been a focal point of Philadelphia's offense, and Shipley's recent performance provides additional confidence in the backfield depth.
