New Miami Dolphins' running back Raheem Mostert has yet to appear at offseason team activities but said he is close to taking the field again, tweeting on Wednesday “rehab is going great! Close to 100%!”
Mostert rushed one time in 2021 before electing to undergo osteochondral allograft surgery to repair an articular cartilage injury in his left knee, an injury and surgery that is just as complicated as it sounds.
Unfortunately, despite being nearly a year removed from surgery and contrary to Mostert's proclamations, the 30-year-old isn't near 100% now and is likely on a downward tumble in his career, according to the ProFootballDocs.
If the medical information reported is correct, there are few-to-no long-term success stories of players recovering from this surgery, the Docs say, and Mostert's age and previous role don't help his case.
He'll enter his season with an SIC health score of 43, meaning he will produce at well under 50% of his normal play when healthy.
The 30-year-old speedster signed a one-year, $3.25 million contract to follow former 49ers' assistant Mike McDaniel to Miami after a little over two years as the lead back in San Francisco's multi-pronged rushing attack.
His main sticking point as an explosive back was his ability to evade tacklers, made deadly cuts into the open field, and breakaway for massive gains.
The trouble with his knee surgery, which involved a live knee cartilage and bone transplant from a fresh cadaver, is it will likely take away his violent cutting.
As a breakaway burner, the Dolphins could still use him as a target for screen passes or to run straight through open holes as the surgery won't be a detriment to his game-breaking speed, but he won't be the dynamic runner he has shown.
Mostert has played only nine games since his breakout performance in the 2019 playoffs, including a record-breaking 220-year, four-touchdown showing in the NFC Championship Game.
He was one of a handful of offseason additions Miami made to revitalize their offense alongside Tyreek Hill, Chase Edmonds, Cedrick Wilson, and Sony Michel, but is the least likely of the bunch to make solid contributions in this new-look attack.
