Dak Prescott Injury: Cowboys' QB Could Miss Extended Time After Thumb Surgery

Dak Prescott left the Cowboys' SNF loss with six minutes left in the fourth quarter after hitting his right hand on the helmet of an approaching Buccaneers' pass-rusher twice in a four-play span.

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones said to reporters postgame that Prescott will undergo surgery for a right thumb fracture above the joint and miss several weeks.

Prescott will likely have pins placed near the base of his thumb and will miss at least six weeks as he recovers from his fracture, according to the Pro Football Docs.

Dak Prescott Injury Update

Todd Archer of ESPN reported that Prescott suffered a fracture, which Prescott later confirmed himself. The 29-year-old said his fracture was “cleaner than it could have been” and that he will meet with doctors on Monday to decide when he will go under the knife.

The Pro Football Docs were initially optimistic that Prescott avoided any significant ligament injury, specifically the UCL.

Now, Dallas' 2022 season seems much more uncertain.

In that minimum six-week absence, Prescott will miss games against the Bengals, Rams and Eagles.

Prescott has suffered two significant injuries in the last three seasons after playing in each of the first 64 games of his career.

The Cowboys, 0-1, now face an early slate of games without starters Tyron Smith, Connor McGovern, and Dak Prescott.

Cooper Rush will likely serve as the starting quarterback until Prescott can return.
