Head coach Mike McCarthy will undergo an appendectomy after experiencing abdominal pain Wednesday morning, but he is expected to coach on Sunday in the big NFC East matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Our panel of former NFL head team physicians guarantee McCarthy will be able to coach Sunday and he will likely make an appearance at practice ahead of the big matchup.
During Dr. David Chao's time with the Chargers, then head coach Norv Turner had acute appendicitis and underwent a procedure on Friday. He returned to coach on Sunday against Baltimore in Week 2, 2009 despite high heat and humidity that day.
An appendectomy is a fairly straight forward procedure and recovery if caught early enough.
McCarthy's appendectomy is likely minor in nature compared to Joe Burrow's procedure during training camp 2022. Burrow had an IV for 8 days after the procedure, indicating they caught his appendicitis late and he carried a risk of infection.
A trio of Cowboys coaches will oversee practice until McCarthy can return: defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and special teams coordinator John Fassel.
McCarthy, 60, is in his third season as Dallas' head coach. The Cowboys are 39-23-0 under his tenure.
Dallas is favored at home against the Eagles by 3.5 points and the over/under is 51.5.
