Caitlin Clark Set To Return From Groin Injury

Caitlin Clark Set To Return From Groin Injury

(Update: Clark returned July 9th in the Fever's loss to the Valkyries 80-61. Clark played 25 minutes going 4 of 12 from the field for 10 points adding 5 rebounds and 6 assists.)

Caitlin Clark is set to make her return after a second injury this season. After missing five games with a groin injury sustained during the Indiana Fever’s June 26 matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks, the rookie sensation is set to return to action on Wednesday, July 9. Head coach Stephanie White told reports after practice on Tuesday that barring any setbacks, she expects Clark to be available on Wednesday.

Groin Injury Timeline

Clark suffered the groin strain shortly after a hard fall in Seattle on June 24 in the waning seconds of the game. She grimaced and seemed to favor the groin with a limp as she walked back to the bench. Clark was ruled out ahead of the June 26 contest against the Sparks, marking the second injury of her WNBA career.

Fever head coach Stephanie White described the situation as “very much a day-to-day thing” and emphasized a cautious, long-view approach to Clark’s recovery. ProFootballDoc Dr. David Chao cast doubt on the idea of the injury being a day-to-day injury. “All I’m saying is groin injuries are not day to day,” said Chao. “We’re a week in already. I think it proves our point—it’s not day-to-day. It’s at least in the week-to-week category.”

Return to Play

Clark is expected to return Wednesday against the Golden State Valkyries. According to reports, her playing time will likely be monitored, with her minutes projected to fall in the high 20s. The Fever remained competitive in her absence thanks to elevated performances from veterans like Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston. During that time, they also won the prestigious Commissioners Cup and the team shared in a $500,000 prize pool.

Her return comes at a pivotal moment for Indiana, who currently sit at .500 and are preparing for a playoff push. With the WNBA All-Star Game just over a week away, where Clark is slated to captain one of the teams, her health and rhythm heading into the break will be closely watched.

Impact and Outlook

Groin strains can be tricky, particularly for players whose game relies on quick directional changes and burst acceleration. Given Clark’s heavy usage and the physical demands of her position, the Fever should take a conservative approach to hopefully prevent a more serious setback.

Prior to her injury, Clark was averaging 18.2 points, 8.9 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per game. While she struggled from deep in the games leading up to her absence (hitting just under 30% from three), her playmaking and court vision remained elite. If she returns to form quickly, Clark could elevate a Fever team that is already proving it can win with or without her.
