The Denver Broncos may be dealing with more injury concerns than their practice report suggests as they prepare for the conference championship game, according to Sports Injury Central’s Pro Football Doc, Dr. David Chao.

“As playoff pressure intensifies, so does the coach speak,” Chao said, noting that gamesmanship on injury reports is common this time of year. Chao emphasized that his observations are not a criticism of Broncos coach Sean Payton, but rather part of standard postseason strategy.

One notable listing involves wide receiver Pat Bryant, who was designated as a limited participant despite sustaining what would be his second concussion of the season. Chao said it is extremely rare for a player to return from a second concussion within a single week and expects Bryant to be unavailable.

Wide receiver Troy Franklin was also listed as limited with a hamstring injury after being observed doing little work during the portion of practice open to the media. Chao noted that hamstring injuries are particularly difficult for speed receivers to play through, raising further questions about his availability.

Running back J.K. Dobbins, approximately 10 weeks removed from Lisfranc surgery, has had his practice window opened. While the move is procedural given the timing of the season, Chao said it would be difficult for Dobbins to be effective and does not expect him to be close to full strength even if he plays.

Center Luke Wattenberg was listed as a full participant on the first day of his practice window following a shoulder injury, an uncommon designation. Chao observed that Wattenberg appeared heavily taped and limited in use of his left shoulder, though he may still play out of necessity with backup Alex Forsyth injured.

Chao added that Payton was transparent regarding quarterback Bo Nix’s injury, but noted that postseason injury disclosure often involves a mix of openness and deflection. More updates are expected as the Broncos approach kickoff.
