Braves star second baseman Ozzie Albies fractured his left foot in the fifth inning of Monday's game, according to the team.
Albies suffered the apparent fracture when he pushed off his left foot while jumping out of the box. He made soft contact after taking an awkward swing on a ball that was far inside and his foot gave out during his follow-through.
Based on initial video and the Braves' non-descript reporting of the injury, the ProBaseballDocs are concerned that Albies suffered a multiple-metatarsal fracture, which would require surgery to repair.
The 25-year-old will likely be placed on the 60-day IL, but has the potential to return around the playoffs for Atlanta's championship defense.
The Braves didn't specify the type or location of the fracture, heightening the Docs' worries about a multi-location injury. Albies will likely undergo further tests to confirm the severity of the broken foot.
Atlanta held serve for the first six weeks of the season but have caught fire since Ronald Acuña Jr. re-acclimated in late May, winning 12 straight games after Monday night's victory.
The run has them squarely in the third Wild Card spot and five games behind the Mets in the NL East.
Twenty-seven-year-old infielder Orlando Arzia replaced Albies on Monday, and he and Travis Demeritte are expected to split duties up the middle.
Albies is batting .246 with eight home runs, 33 runs and 33 RBI in 240 at-bats this season.
