The Blue Jays removed outfield George Springer with a left ankle sprain he suffered after crashing into the wall in the second inning.
Springer went down chasing after a Brandon Lowe triple and initially stayed in the game after testing out his ankle with Blue Jays' medical personnel.
Raimel Tapia replaced him in centerfield in the bottom of the third inning, but not before Springer grounded out in his second at-bat in the top of the third.
Springer appeared to suffer a mild inversion ankle sprain, according to the ProBaseballDocs, and has a chance to avoid the 10-day IL. He will return as a DH before putting his glove back on.
Springer appeared to twist his ankle when it planted in the warning track as he landed after bumping against the wall.
The 32-year-old suffered a similar injury in 2021. He appeared to turn his ankle on a play at the wall on August 14, but after a day off, he was placed on the IL with a left knee injury. He returned on August 30 and was able to finish the season.
Because of his past ankle injuries, Springer suffered little new damage and could return with minimal missed time, according to the Docs. The level of swelling that develops will likely determine how much time – if any – he misses.
Initial concern after any hard impact is for a concussion or neck injury, but it appears Springer avoided both.
Springer suffered a forearm contusion after being HBP on April 20, but was able to avoid any missed time.
The 2017 World Series MVP is batting .278 with seven home runs, 21 runs, and 18 RBI in 115 at-bats this season.
