San Francisco Giants pitcher Blake Snell has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left adductor strain, the third time in his career he has been placed on IL for this type of injury.
This development occurred after Snell was scratched from his most recent start, signaling a problem with his push-up leg, a critical component for a pitcher's delivery. Given the importance of the leg in pitching, this injury is a significant concern for the Giants.
The risk of muscle injuries for Snell was heightened by the fact that he wasn't signed until March 18, which meant he had a shorter preparation time for the season including no spring Training games. This delay in signing made it more likely for him to experience strains or other soft tissue injuries.
Now, with a left adductor strain, there's a strong possibility that his stay on the injured list could extend beyond 15 days, as these types of injuries often require a longer recovery period to ensure full rehabilitation (20 days in 2021 and 33 days in 2022).
The Giants will need to approach Snell's recovery with caution to avoid exacerbating his injury. Rushing him back too soon could lead to compensatory shoulder or elbow injuries as he adjusts his mechanics to compensate for the strained adductor.
As pitchers rely heavily on their legs for power and stability, ensuring that Snell's push-up leg is fully healed will be crucial for his long-term health and effectiveness on the mound.
