Buffalo Bills star cornerback Tre’Davious White is working his way back from a torn ACL he suffered during Week 12 last season. Head coach Sean McDermott has not given a clear indication when White will be able to return.
Our team of Pro Football Docs project the All-Pro cornerback will not be able to participate in training camp and would not be surprised if he started the season on the physically unable to perform list.
A torn ACL usually requires a nine-month recovery, which would mean White would return to action sometime in mid-September. However, that's just a return to play timeline.
It will take longer than that for the corner to have full confidence with deceleration and cutting using his injured left knee.
Thus, the LSU product enters this season with a 41 SIC Score.
Dr. David Chao, ProFootballDoc, said White faces a significant hurdle to have a successful 2022 season considering his ACL injury occurred late last season. It is much more difficult for a cornerback to be effective immediately following a torn ACL.
Unlike a wide receiver who must get to a specific spot along a route, a cornerback can only react— the position requires the ability to easily change direction with acceleration and deceleration. White will likely struggle with that once he does return.
While there is still optimism from Bills’ fans and coaches that White will start Week 1, the two starting cornerbacks will most likely be 2020 seventh round pick Dane Jackson and 2022 23rd overall pick Kair Elam.
Potentially not having White for the start season will be a tough blow for the Super Bowl favorite. Pro Football Focus ranks White as the No. 8 outside cornerback in the league.
His 0.87 yards per coverage snap allowed is one of the best among qualifying cornerbacks. The two-time Pro-Bowl cornerback also has 16 interceptions in 72 career games.
The Bills formidable defense finished last season as the top overall total defense by allowing just 272.8 yards per game. In order to continue that success, the young cornerbacks will have to step up in the event their star teammate White is absent.
