Quarterback Baker Mayfield exited today’s Sunday Night Football game at halftime after appearing to injure his left shoulder while attempting a deep throw. Mayfield was down on the turf for a moment before being assisted to the sideline, and it was noted earlier in the first half that trainers had examined his left shoulder, suggesting the hit had aggravated a lingering issue.
This latest injury is particularly concerning given Mayfield’s documented history of left-shoulder problems. In 2021 he suffered a torn labrum and tuberosity fracture in his left (non-throwing) shoulder, playing through the injury before undergoing surgery in the offseason. His decline in productivity led to his departure in Cleveland before bouncing back nicely in Tampa Bay.
While not knowing the severity of the injury at the moment is not known, it’s worth noting that the score at halftime was 31-7 in favor of Los Angeles so the blowout could also have been the motivation for sitting out the second half. With today’s setback, the team faces the question of how aggressively to manage his recovery, and whether his availability for upcoming games will be in doubt depending on the results of further testing.
