Auburn’s Johni Broome Battling Elbow Injury Ahead of Final Four Clash vs Florida

Auburn star Johni Broome exited Sunday’s Elite 8 matchup early in the second half against Michigan State after suffering a right elbow hyperextension and UCL sprain, according to video analysis from the staff at SICscore.com. He also sustained a mild left ankle sprain on the same play. Prior to leaving the game, Broome had been dominant, scoring 22 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and adding two assists. While it initially appeared the most significant concern was related to his left knee and ankle based on how he went down, it’s the right elbow injury that presents the most risk moving forward.

X-rays on the elbow were negative, and Broome was able to return to the game after being examined in the locker room. Upon his return, he immediately drained a three-pointer but was visibly hampered the rest of the way—frequently grabbing at his elbow and avoiding contact with that arm when going for rebounds. His performance was gritty, and he played through pain, something he’s done consistently this season while managing ongoing ankle and shoulder issues.

Fortunately for Auburn, the Final Four doesn’t resume until April 5, giving Broome nearly a full week to recover ahead of their national semifinal showdown against SEC rival Florida—a team that beat them 90–81 in the SEC Tournament. While Broome is not expected to be at full strength, there is zero chance he sits out a game of this magnitude. As he’s proven all season, even a less-than-100% Johni Broome can still be highly effective. Expect him to push through again in a do-or-die Final Four matchup.
