The Arkansas Razorbacks were upset by Liberty University 21-19 after quarterback KJ Jefferson had an uncharacteristically bad day. After the game, head coach Sam Pittman revealed that Jefferson had been battling a clavicle injury and status was questionable going into the game.
During the media portion of practice Monday, Jefferson did not throw as he was rehabbing the clavicle injury. The decision to let Jefferson play surprised some Arkansas receivers after backup Malik Hornsby received most of the reps at practice during the week.
Jefferson threw two interceptions on the day, more than his total (1) before the game. He averaged his second lowest yards per carry (2.3) and lowest QBR (41.8) of the season.
Furthermore, the Razorback’s offense only scored three points in the first three quarters before trying to mount a comeback. Even though Jefferson struggled, his coach believed he was the team’s best option.
“I don't think so,” Pittman said. "I guess you can look at it after the game. You’ve got to make … The difference is, y’all and the public and all that, you’ve got postgame to sit down and go, ‘Maybe this should have happened? Maybe that should have happened?’ You’re making real time decisions. I think it is true that if you don’t practice the entirety of the practice each day and each week, you’re not going to play as well.”
Before the game, Jefferson believed he was ready to play and overall gutted through the entire game. Jefferson threw the ball 37 times on a bad shoulder and ran it 16 times. His injury did not affect his volume.
Look for coach Pittman to get Jefferson some practice reps this week.
LSU is favored by 3 points on the road against Arkansas, and the over/under is 63.5, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
