Penn State's standout edge rusher, Abdul Carter, has firmly positioned himself as a premier candidate for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. His exceptional performance on the field has garnered significant attention from NFL teams and analysts alike. However, recent injury concerns have introduced complexities into his draft journey.
During the 2024 season, Carter delivered an impressive stat line, recording 68 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, and 12 sacks. His relentless pursuit of quarterbacks and disruptive presence in the backfield earned him unanimous All-America honors and the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year award. Carter's versatility and athleticism have drawn comparisons to NFL stars, making him a coveted prospect for teams seeking a transformative defensive player.
Despite his on-field prowess, Carter's draft outlook has been clouded by health issues. In December 2024, he sustained a shoulder injury during the College Football Playoff quarterfinals against Boise State, which prevented him from participating in drills at the NFL Scouting Combine. More recently, routine medical evaluations at the combine revealed a stress reaction in his right foot. This unexpected finding has led to discussions about potential surgical intervention.
Dr. David Chao, known as Pro Football Doc, provided insights into Carter's condition:
"There's no doubt this kid can play football; there's no doubt he will be a top draft pick. My first question is, if he doesn't have any symptoms and surgery is not recommended, how was it even discovered?"
Dr. Chao further elaborated on the nature of such injuries among edge rushers:
"Edge rushers are particularly prone to stress reactions and potentially stress fractures, especially at the fifth metatarsal outside, because they really have to get around the edge."
Carter's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, addressed the situation, stating that there are mixed opinions on whether surgery is necessary. The options include undergoing preemptive surgery with an estimated eight-week recovery period or opting for rest and rehabilitation to participate in Penn State's pro day on March 28. Rosenhaus expressed confidence that Carter's draft status would remain unaffected, regardless of the chosen medical path.
The Tennessee Titans, holding the No. 1 overall pick, have shown significant interest in Carter, viewing him as a "generational talent." However, his injury status could prompt the Titans to reassess their draft strategy, potentially considering other top prospects. This decision may trigger a ripple effect, influencing the selections of teams positioned subsequently in the draft order.
Carter remains resolute in his self-assessment, stating, "I feel like I'm the best player in the country, and the best player should be selected No. 1."
