The Astros’ right-hander suffered a right calf injury in the third inning on Sunday and he will undergo an MRI on Monday, which will determine if he will make his next scheduled start next Sunday against the Angels.
The Astros, 82-47, are safely 11.5 games up in the AL West and were without 2021 all-star starter Lance McCullers Jr. for most of the season, meaning they should be able to handle a potential stint on the 15-day IL.
The Dodgers, who will now miss Walker Buehler for the rest of the season after he underwent his second Tommy John surgery, will reportedly soon get back lefty Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw threw a 70-pitch simulated game over the weekend and could return from the 15-day IL on Thursday or Friday, according to Dave Roberts. Kershaw suffered a low-back strain on August 4, his fifth back injury since 2016 and his second injury this season.
Phillies’ righty Zack Wheeler is suffering from right forearm tendonitis and will be on the IL for an undetermined amount of time. Wheeler previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2015.
Slugger Yordan Alvarez sat out of Sunday’s win over the Orioles with right hand soreness likely stemming from the hamate injury he suffered in mid-June.
Alvarez has yet to undergo surgery – as the Pro Baseball Docs have advised and which would keep him out for 6-8 weeks – and has played progressively worse since heading to the IL over the all-star break: In August, Alvarez is batting .234 with a .638 OPS, one home run, 10 RBI, and 22 strikeouts in 77 at-bats.
Houston’s closer, Ryan Pressly, is six days into a stint on the IL because of neck spasms. The 33-year-old, who has 25 saves and a 3.11 ERA this season, missed three weeks in April and May with knee inflammation.
The White Sox injury woes haven’t let up this season and star outfielders Luis Robert and Eloy Jimenez are once again missing time.
Robert suffered a left wrist sprain on Aug. 12 and missed one week, during which he underwent an injection to address inflammation. He returned on Aug. 20 but didn’t play over the weekend with wrist soreness.
Eloy Jimenez, meanwhile, sat out the weekend series after feeling a “grabbing” in his right leg and is reportedly still dealing with soreness. The leftfielder suffered a torn hamstring and underwent surgery in late April and has played 42 games since returning on July 6.
Domineering right-hander starter Michael Kopech suffered a left knee strain on Aug. 22 and was sent to the 15-day IL with an expected return after the minimum stay.
As the September roster expansion looms, more and more injured players have been shut down for 2022 in recent weeks, including: pitchers Walker Buehler, James Paxton, Paul Blackburn, Kyle Hendricks, Zack Greinke, and Tarik Skubal, and veteran sluggers with bad shoulders Joey Votto and Michael Brantley.
