National Championship Injury Breakdown: Miami vs. Indiana
How Health and Availability Could Shape the Title Game

As Miami and Indiana prepare for Monday night’s College Football Playoff National Championship, both programs arrive relatively healthy by season-long standards — reflected in elite SIC Scores of Miami 92.8 and Indiana 91.1. But a handful of key absences and first-half suspensions may quietly tilt the matchup in crucial ways.

Miami Hurricanes Injury Overview (SIC Score: 92.8)

The Hurricanes enter the title game as one of the healthiest teams in the country, but a few targeted injuries could influence personnel packages and rotation depth.

Offensive Availability

  • TE Elijah Lofton — OUT
Lofton was carted off in the semifinal win over Ole Miss and will not play in the National Championship. Miami loses its starting tight end, a valuable inline blocker and safety-valve target in the RPO game. This forces Miami into more 11-personnel with backup TE usage dropping off significantly.

  • RB Jordan Lyle — OUT (long-term)
Lyle has been out since Week 11. His absence matters far less now with Mark Fletcher commanding the overwhelming majority of the backfield touches. Miami’s run-game identity remains intact.

Defensive Changes

  • CB Xavier Lucas — SUSPENDED (First Half)
Although healthy, Lucas will miss the first half due to a targeting call from the semifinal. This is a significant schematic hit — Lucas is one of Miami’s top cover corners. Expect Indiana to test the Hurricanes’ secondary early with boundary-side isolation throws until Lucas returns after halftime.

  • CB Damari Brown & DL Cole McConathy — QUESTIONABLE
Both starters were listed with undisclosed injuries earlier in January. Their availability could further stress the secondary if neither is 100%.

Together, the Hurricanes maintain strong overall health, but the first-half hole at cornerback and the loss of Lofton’s versatility are the two real concerns.

Indiana Hoosiers Injury Overview (SIC Score: 91.1)

The undefeated Hoosiers arrive with a clean offensive bill of health — a major advantage for a unit that thrives on rhythm and efficiency. But defensively, there are cracks.

Defensive Line Depth Problems

  • DE Stephen Daley — OUT (leg)

  • DE Kellan Wyatt — OUT
Indiana will be without both starting edge defenders. This is a major storyline. The Hoosiers rely heavily on edge pressure to set the tone of their 4-2-5 front, and losing both ends diminishes pass-rush consistency and weakens their run fits on the perimeter.

Expect Miami to exploit this immediately: stretch runs, outside-zone, and play-action boots could be much more effective without Indiana’s top two edge players.

Secondary Concerns

  • CB Jah Jah Boyd — OUT

  • CB Bryson Bonds — OUT (long-term)
Indiana’s cornerback depth is thinner than at any point this season. Against Miami’s vertical passing game, this becomes a potential mismatch — especially once Xavier Lucas returns for the Hurricanes in the second half.

Injury-Based Matchup Outlook

Miami Advantages

  • Healthier defensive front and back end overall (once Lucas returns).

  • Indiana’s missing edge rushers should allow Miami’s run game and play-action to operate cleanly.

  • With a high SIC Score of 92.8, Miami enters the game with fewer reliability concerns.

Indiana Advantages

  • Offense is nearly fully healthy — no major injuries to QB, RB1, or WRs.

  • Stability in the offensive lineup helps maintain rhythm against a Miami defense missing a key CB for the first half.

Bottom Line: Injury Edge Leans Miami

With a slightly stronger SIC Score (92.8 vs. 91.1) and fewer structural defensive losses, Miami enters the National Championship with a health-based edge. Indiana’s offense is intact, but the dual loss at defensive end and thin cornerback group could be decisive against a Miami attack that excels when given clean pockets and run-game balance.

The injuries — particularly Indiana’s defensive absences — set up a matchup where Miami’s offense may be able to dictate terms as the game progresses, especially in the second half when the Hurricanes return to full strength on the perimeter.
