As the 2025 WNBA season tips off, injuries and recoveries play a crucial role in shaping expectations for each Eastern Conference team. Here we’ll examine where each team in the East stands as the season gets ready to start on Friday.
Atlanta Dream - Jordin Canada’s is the Dream’s biggest injury concern heading into the season. Canada suffered a non-contact knee injury in the first quarter of an early preseason game against the Mystics. It’s somewhat encouraging that she's only been ruled out for two weeks at this point so she might miss the first couple of games of the regular season, but then should be ready for the rest of the season.
Chicago Sky - Courtney Vandersloot, one of the most seasoned WNBA vets in the league missed the May 10th preseason game with a rib injury, likely a rest concern. If she misses time once the regular season starts, it doesn’t look like much time would be missed.
Connecticut Sun - The Connecticut Sun have a mostly revamped roster and Diamond DeShields figures to be a big part of the rebuild. She was held out of their preseason games with an ankle injury in an effort to be ready for the May 18th season opener against Washington. Marina Mabrey missed one game with a listed knee injury but has played her normal rotation in the second preseason game.
Indiana Fever - Caitlin Clark was held out of the team’s first preseason game with a left leg injury, the team wasn’t specific as to the nature of the injury, but it was likely more rest than it was concern for an injury as the next day was her Iowa homecoming preseason game. One of their newer acquisitions, Sophie Cunningham is expected to be a huge part of the Fever’s defensive game plan this season, she exited the May 10th preseason game with a right ankle injury, an injury she’s had before and will be one to keep an eye on as the regular season starts on May 16th.
New York Liberty - The Liberty don’t currently have any injury concerns to any of their major rotation players at this time. Breanna Stewart didn’t play in the May 10th game but that was due to rest.
Washington Mystics - The Mystics are entering the season in an unenviable spot with their injuries. Their first round draft pick, Georgia Amoore has a torn ACL and will miss her entire rookie season. Shakira Austin, one of the better players on this roster, has sat out the final preseason game with a right leg injury, per her head coach, it is more of a strength and conditioning issue rather than a true injury concern so if she misses time, it shouldn’t be much once the season starts. Aaliyah Edwards has missed the preseason with a lower back contusion and was due to be re-evaluated around mid-May, which should have her ready for the regular season if the re-evaluation comes back with good news.
