The 2025 Masters Tournament is upon us, and while the pristine fairways of Augusta National are ready, several top golfers arrive with lingering injury concerns.
As always, injuries are a critical x-factor in major championships, and this year is no different.
From world-class veterans to rising stars, a number of players either enter the field at less than 100% or have already withdrawn.
Singh, the 2000 Masters champion withdrew on Monday 7 April from the Masters with an undisclosed injury.
Following the Texas Children’s Houston Open where McIlroy finished tied for fifth, he said that his right elbow was giving him some issues which raised concerns. This season, McIlroy has been in top form, he has wins at both the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Players Championship leading to be ranked the 2nd best player in the world. After recent treatment McIlroy said today that his elbow is "all good" as he prepares for the first round of the Masters on Thursday this week.
In January 2025 Noren suffered a hamstring/glute tear and will miss the 2025 Masters. The injury has sidelined him through the early part of 2025, and while he has publicly stated he hopes to return "soon," there is still no definitive tournament circled for his comeback. The rehab process for this type of injury can be unpredictable, especially given the rotational demands of a golf swing.
After suffering an acute intercostal strain in January that required rest and rehab, Schauffele returned to action at the Arnold Palmer Invitational after an eight-week hiatus due to the injury. His comeback round was challenging, carding a 5-over 77. In mid-March Schauffele hit a final round of nine-over 81 to finish in 72nd place at THE PLAYERS Championship. In late March he finished 12th at the Valspar Championship.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler sustained a puncture wound to his right hand on Christmas Day while preparing dinner, requiring surgery to remove glass fragments. This injury caused him to withdraw from The Sentry and The American Express. Scheffler made his season debut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, showing no lingering effects from the injury. He’s expected to be at full strength by Augusta after finishing tied for second place at the Texas Children's Houston Open last week.
After undergoing surgery on his left wrist in August 2024, Jordan Spieth returned to competition earlier this year. However, he experienced discomfort after jamming his wrist during the first round at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and he continues to monitor his wrist to prevent reaggravation as touch and feel are central to his game. Spieth recently finished tied for 12th place at the Valero Texas Open and now heads to Augusta where he has had mixed results in his last four starts with two top-five's and two missed cuts.
Woods, the 15-time major champion, underwent surgery to repair his ruptured left Achilles tendon in March 2025 and will miss the 2025 Masters. He is expected to make a full recovery and likely to return in 2026 to play in a limited number of tournaments.
