The Michigan State Spartans have started their college football season with an undefeated, 2-0 record. They beat their last two opponents a combined 87 to 13. But, in the team’s first two games, they suffered injuries to two starting players.
After making a 22-yard catch along Akron's sideline late in the second quarter, a defender pushed Reed out of bounds while hauling a deep pass and caused him to slide into the Akron University bench. Reed was visibly in pain as he reached for his back and was taken to the locker room by the Michigan State trainers. According to the Big Ten Network broadcast, he suffered a cut on his back. After halftime, he was seen in “street clothes” and didn’t return to the game. His head coach Mel Tucker had this to say about him at the team’s press conference, “whenever that is that, he's ready to come back.”
One of the team captains of the Michigan State Spartans defense is Xavier Henderson, who started 33 consecutive games at safety. He’s a four-year letter winner and three-year starter that leads all active Spartans with 235 tackles. He’s essentially been the glue for Mel Tucker’s ferocious defense. But, Henderson injured his leg last game and didn’t return. Tucker says he expects Henderson to return this season and is sore. But, he didn’t discuss the severity of the injury, which leaves a question on if Hendersons 33 game start streak will end.
The Washington Huskies have started the season well under first-year head coach Kalen DeBoer. They beat their first two opponents by a combined 71 points. But, this will be their first test against a ranked opponent. So, it will be interesting to see how a revolving door in the cornerback room affects the team’s performance.
Last game, Perryman was shadowing a wide receiver running down the sideline, and then the camera pans to him, holding the back of his leg. He was in pain and had to lean on two team trainers to get back to his sideline. Perryman has been a part of a revamped Huskies defensive backfield with the loss of Trent Mcduffie and Kyler Gordon in last year’s NFL draft. He’s a transfer from UC Davis and is in his final year of eligibility. His head coach didn’t give any information on the severity of the injury but called it a “leg issue.”
