The White Sox placed third baseman Yoan Moncada on the 10-day IL with a right oblique strain Thursday ahead of their season opener against the Tigers.Moncada suffered the injury in the batting cages before Chicago’s final spring training game on Tuesday and, despite tying to lobby Tony La Russa to let him test it out, he was pulled from the lineup. The ProBaseballDocs, who include former Rangers team physician John Conway, are confident the strain will keep him for the entirety of April, leaving the question of when in May he will make his return.Oblique strains are notoriously fickle and can linger and severely impact hitters. The obliques, the muscles that line the sides of your abdomen, are essential for the trunk twist motion that hitters use to summon power when torquing their body at the plate. As a third baseman, Moncada consistently uses those muscles while fielding as well. The 10-day IL is a placeholder for now, although the 26-year-older should be able to avoid the dreaded 60-day designation. Moncada batted for a .263 average with 14 home runs, 61 RBIs, and 74 runs in 144 games for the Central winners last season.
