The White Sox will start their 2022 without ace Lance Lynn, as the 34-year-old righty suffered a torn tendon in his right knee that will require surgery. The team did not specify the exact nature of the tear, but the ProBaseballDocs believe it's a partial patella tendon tear. Lynn limped out of Saturday's contest with right knee soreness that an MRI later revealed to be caused by the tear.General Manager Rick Hahn said Lynn will be sidelined about 4 weeks after he undergoes surgery, and will likely take about 4 weeks to ramp up to his season debut. That fits the ProBaseballDocs' assessment, which is that Lynn will be out until June at the earliest. The White Sox will need to be careful to not bring Lynn back too. If they do, he could develop a shoulder or elbow injury to overcompensate for the lack of push off from his injured leg.Lynn's Sports Injury Central score for the rest of the season will be 67 as it's an issue he and the team will have to manage.Hahn said the procedure is similar to the one catcher Yamani Grandal underwent on July 7 last year. Grandal returned to the White Sox on Aug. 27, but went under the knife for a second time shortly after the season ended.Lynn, who made his second All-Star game with a 2.69 ER and 176-strikeout showing in 2021, spent 10 days on the IL in early September last year with inflammation in the same right knee. He said that he began feeling discomfort after his Aug. 12 start in the Field of Dreams game, but was able to return Sept. 14. Lynn's production was limited to close the season: the 2011 World Series champion had a 4.49 ERA and allowed 8 home runs over 42.1 innings in his final 8 starts from Aug. 12 on. He gave up 5 earned runs on 6 hits with 4 strikeouts in 3.2 innings in his lone playoff start, a loss to the Astros.Lynn spent about a month rehabbing the knee over the offseason, but it appears the issue has bled over into this new season.A true repair would carry a recovery of four months or more.Lynn, who finished third in the Cy Young voting last season was projected to be the White Sox opening day starter, but the defending AL Central Division champs are likely to turn to Lucas Giolito. Dallas Keuchel, Dylan Cease, Michael Kopech, and Reynaldo Lopez rounding out the rotation.
