The White Sox announced that outfielder Eloy Jiménez underwent hamstring surgery Tuesday that will require six-to-eight weeks to heal. The 25-year-old tore a right hamstring tendon while running out a ground ball on Saturday and was placed on the 10-day IL, as expected, the next day. Jimenez hit the turf hard after stretching out on his final stride and had to be carted off the field. It is highly unusual, according to the ProBaseballDocs, to need hamstring surgery unless it is a distal tear of the tendonitis portion of the bone – distal meaning further away from his abdomen – which appears to be the case for Jimenez. The Docs were concerned at the time that Jimenez could be out much longer than the 10-day minimum and, because of the procedure, he will undoubtedly miss at least 60 days and likely closer to three months. That timeline would put him back on the field in late July or early August, just in time for the playoff push. The good news is that Jimenez should see a full recovery and return to form for the contending White Sox later this summer. This will be the second straight season that Chicago will miss Jimenez for a majority of the season. The 2020 Silver Slugger suffered a torn pectoral muscle during spring training that postponed his 2021 debut until July 26.Jimenez hit .249 with 10 home runs, 10 doubles, and 37 RBI in 55 games before posting five hits and three RBI in 17 postseason at-bats.Jimenez will join the likes of Lance Lynn, Garrett Crochet, Yermin Mercedes, Yoan Moncada, and Joe Kelly on the struggling White Sox injured list.
