Bo Jackson Reveals He's Been Dealing with Hiccups for Nearly a Year

NFL legend Bo Jackson revealed on a radio appearance Wednesday that he has been dealing with the hiccups for nearly a year.

“I’ve had the hiccups since last July,” Jackson said on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning on Birmingham’s WJOX-FM. “I’m getting a medical procedure done the end of this week, I think, to try to remedy it.”

There are multiple options for stopping the hiccups, including the use of anti-inflammatories and a non-invasive procedure to implant a device to send electric impulses to the vagus nerve.

“I’ve been busy sitting at the doctor’s poking me, shining lights down my throat, probing me every way they can to find out why I’ve got these hiccups.”

The 60-year-old Raiders’ legend said an appointment to address the hiccups caused him to miss last month’s dedication of a Frank Thomas statue at Auburn.

“I have done everything — scare me, hang upside down, drink water, smell the ass of a porcupine,” Jackson said. “It doesn’t work.”

The longest recorded case of the hiccups happened to Charles Osborne, who reportedly had hiccups for 68 years (from 1922-1990).

Jackson was in Birmingham to play in the Regions Tradition Celebrity Pro-Am golf tournament at Greystone Golf & Country Club in Hoover, Alabama along with Charles Barkley, Auburn coach Hugh Freeze and University of Georgia coach Kirby Smart, among others.

Jackson played four years with the Raiders before his career was cut short by a hip dislocation.

He rushed for 2,782 yards and 16 touchdowns in 38 career games with the then Oakland Raiders.

Jackson also played baseball for eight seasons, including two after his football career.

In eight seasons split between the Royals, White Sox and Angels, he hit .250 for his career with 141 home runs and made one All-Star team in 1989.
