The Yankees placed slugging rightfielder and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day IL on Wednesday with a right calf strain.
UPDATE: Manager Aaron Boone told reporters after Wednesday night's game that Stanton is suffering from right ankle inflammation, not a calf strain.
Stanton was pinch-hit for in the seventh inning on Tuesday ahead of what would have been his third at-bat of the game.
He appeared to slip running out of the box after his first at-bat, although the Yankees haven't confirmed when he suffered the strain.
He ended the nigh 0-2 with one groundout and one swinging strikeout, dropping his average to .285. Stanton has hit 11 home runs with 35 RBI and only three doubles in 151 at-bats this season.
Stanton played 140 games last season after suffering through two years full of injuries, which included a right calf strain in February 2020 that likely would have sidelined him to open the season if not for the postponed start due to labor negotiations during the beginning months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
His laundry list of injuries that limited him to seven home runs and 24 RBI in 41 games between 2019 and 2020 also includes:
Strained left quadriceps in May 2021
Strained left hamstring in August 2020
Strained right calf in February 2020
Strained right quadriceps in October 2019
Sprained right knee in June 2019
Strained left shoulder in May 2019
Strained left biceps in March 2019
Stanton will be eligible to return the first weekend in June as the Yankees continue to struggle through an increasingly hefty portion of their roster going on the IL.
