Former Seahawk QB Russell Wilson is entering his 11th season in the NFL and first with the Denver Broncos. Wilson has remarkably stayed healthy in his incredible career until this past season when he suffered a mallet finger injury to his right middle finger in Week 5.
Wilson underwent surgery on the finger October 8th to place a pin in. However, the injury was actually more complicated than originally thought as multiple screws were needed to repair Wilson’s finger.
The following day, he injury was officially reported as a fracture dislocation with tendon damage. Wilson was placed on IR shortly but returned as we opined to face the Green Bay Packers Week 10. Wilson struggled in his first couple games back from injury due to an issues gripping the ball but he finished the final seven games of the season without another health issue.
In December, Wilson talked about not playing at 100% following his return from injury and admitted he came back a little early but felt he could compete as he has played through injury before.
Besides his finger injury in 2021, Wilson has enjoyed a clean bill of health in his career albeit a 2016 right ankle/MCL issue that lingered but caused no time missed.
Our panel of Pro Football Docs believe that overall in his career Wilson has been a unicorn in terms of health; one of the few outside of the pocket style QBs to have sustained a high level of durability for this length.
Wilson’s finger should be a non-factor in his first season in Denver. The only injury concern that our Pro Football Docs have is that a 33-year-old with his outside the pocket play-style could be a recipe for trouble as he continues to age. That being said, Mr.Unlimited enters the 2022 season with a clean bill of health, and a very high SIC Score of a 95.
