Ryan Yarbrough Injury: Despite Multiple Head Fractures, Optimism for Full Recovery

Kansas City Royals pitcher Ryan Yarbrough suffered multiple head fractures when he was hit in the head by a 106 mph batted ball on Sunday.

The good news so far is Yarbrough did not require emergency surgery and is not at risk for brain damage, according to the Pro Baseball Docs.

The 31-year-old left-hander was able to walk off under his own power but has remained in the hospital for more observation and tests.

Based on the information so far, his life is not in danger and he should make a full recovery. He was reportedly hit near the temple on the left side of his face.

The question at this point is when he will return, not if.

Despite the scary scene, Yarbrough avoided the worst-case scenario. In September 2012, Oakland A’s pitcher Brandon McCarthy was hit on the head by a line drive and required emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.

There is no word thus far that Yarbrough is at risk for brain damage, despite the news that he suffered three non-displaced fractures near his eye. He took the brunt of the force, given that the ball bounced straight back to catcher Salvador Perez.

After the game, Royals manager Matt Quatraro told reporters that Yarbrough was alert and talking when medical staff got out to treat him after the impact.

Multiple teammates have reportedly been in to visit him at the hospital along with Quatraro.

Yarbrough was placed on the 15-day IL and our panel of doctors have optimism he can avoid a 60-day IL stint.

The Royals recalled right hander Jose Cuas to take his spot.
