Following a week saturated with trade rumors, running back Jonathan Taylor remains on the team beyond their self-imposed trade deadline. The Colts have put Taylor on the physically unable to perform list, rendering him ineligible for participation in at least the initial four games of the season.
The question arises: Is Taylor truly injured, or did the team not find adequate value to trade him?
According to Pro Football Docs, Taylor received a 91 SIC score, affirming that he’s healthy entering the 2023 NFL season.
The primary indication of Taylor's health surfaces in the fact that he was nearly traded to the Miami Dolphins. Nonetheless, the Colts disapproved of the trade package. In the NFL, a successful trade requires passing a physical; failure to do so could annul the trade.
Thus, Taylor might still be recuperating from a previous ankle injury, but the condition doesn't appear severe enough to warrant missing games, assuming he remains healthy.
He underwent an arthroscopic debridement procedure at the end of January that was reportedly a success and he should be fully recovered from that procedure at this point.
At this juncture, it appears Taylor and the Colts could be exploiting his ankle injury to abstain from playing in games until a new contract is secured or a trade materializes.
The Colts' next opportune moment to trade Taylor might will be before the NFL's Oct. 31 trade deadline. Absent a deal by then, the Colts could employ the franchise tag on Taylor and revisit trading him in the subsequent offseason.
