New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole will undergo an MRI on his pitching elbow because he has had difficulty recovering between throwing sessions.
The news is obviously concerning for any pitcher. Even if he can avoid the dreaded UCL tear, he will likely land on the 15-day IL to start the season.
Manager Aaron Boone told reporters that Cole’s elbow feels like it does during the season after he throws 100 pitches.
That fatigue has made it tough for Cole to recover between throwing sessions and he’s been limited to just two innings this spring training.
The good news: his velocity has been consistent and he has not had to stop a throwing session.
Cole has been a picture of health throughout his career, surpassing 200 innings five times in his 11-year career.
If his MRI comes back clean, the Yankees are still likely to be cautious with last year’s Cy Young.
Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery are still on the free agent market and could be options for the Bronx Bombers if the news turns sour on Cole.
