Chase Young Undergoes Neck Surgery Two Days After Signing With Saints

Defensive end Chase Young had a busy week, signing a one-year, $13 million deal with the Saints on Tuesday, then undergoing neck surgery today.

Based on his expected recovery timeline, he is likely undergoing a single-level disc surgery that will sideline him into training camp, according to our panel of doctors.

Scans on Young’s neck reportedly showed an issue originating from a stinger he suffered in mid-August last year in a preseason game against the Browns.

Young played the entire season with the injury and finished with 7.5 sacks and 25 combined tackles split between the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Commanders.

The injury reportedly made it difficult to trade him last October, with the Bears not clearing him on his physical and the 49ers acquiring his expiring contract for a 2024 third round pick.

His 1-year deal with the Saints contains $5.01 million guaranteed and $7.99 million in per-game roster bonuses.

Chase Young Injury History

Young was a free agent this offseason because the Commanders declined to pick up his fifth-year option, in part because of the severe left knee injury he suffered in November 2021.

The 2020 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year tore the ACL and patella tendon in his left knee, causing him to get surgery on both knees in order to get a healthy patella tendon for the ACL repair.

Young returned with 3 games remaining in the 2022 season and just began to return to form in preseason 2023 before suffering the neck injury that sent him to surgery this time.
