Starting pitcher Frankie Montas and electrifying outfielder Ramon Laureano each suffered right hand contusions after being pegged by baseballs in the second inning of the A's loss on Friday night.
Montas absorbed a line drive that ricocheted off his right hand in the bottom of the second frame. The 29-year-old's hand was visibly shaking before he walked off the mound with manager Mark Kotsay.
Kotsay said that x-rays on Montas' hand came back negative, and Montas added that by postgame his hand was no longer numb.
Oakland expects that their right-handed ace will be available for his next start, which is scheduled for Thursday against the Rangers.
Montas, the last remaining pitcher in Oakland from the A's stellar rotation the past few seasons, has a 3.55 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and a team-high 55 strikeouts with five quality starts across 50.2 IP.
Laureano was HBP at the base of his right hand in the top of the second. He initially stayed in the game to run the bases, but was replaced in the outfield by Chad Pinder in the bottom of the third.
Laureano is out of the A's lineup on Sunday and is listed as day-to-day after x-rays came back negative on his right hand and wrist.
The 27-year-old is still finding his groove after returning from an 80-game suspension for violating MLB's PED rules on May 8. Laureano is batting .167 with four doubles, seven walks, and seven runs scored in 15 games this season.
