Houston Astros' starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi left Monday's game against the Red Sox on a cart after suffering an apparent left leg injury.
The 32-year-old collapsed face-first after turning and taking a step off the mound to cover a groundball at first base.
The broadcast team immediately opined that he suffered a hamstring injury. By video, the Pro Baseball Docs have significant worry for a left Achilles tendon tear. The video angles were not definitive enough to say for certain what Odorizzi's injury is, but he's not dealing with a knee or ankle injury.
His long pants cover any view of a potential “pop” that is typically seen with Achilles injuries and the view of his second step is blocked by the mound.
The Astros were able to get the final out of the fifth inning and Odorizzi was examined by medical personnel. He was unable to stand up on his own as he experienced obvious discomfort.
Odorizzi was taken off on a cart and the game went into a weather delay after the top of the 6th inning.
He had also been dealing with a fingernail issue on his right hand throughout the last two innings of his start before he went down with the injury.
The right-hander struck out four and allowed one earned run on three hits across five innings, bringing his season ERA down to 3.13.
Update
The Astros reported that Odorizzi left the game with “lower leg discomfort.” This all but confirms the Achilles tear, although the team will undoubtedly wait for the MRI results before making an officials announcement.
