The Padres elected to postpone a CT scan on Tatis Jr.’s wrist that was scheduled for late last week, according to the SDUT’s Kevin Acee, and hope that this upcoming set of images will show enough healing to green light the 23-year-old to finally begin hitting.
Tatis Jr. has been sidelined since the lockout ended in mid-March with a fractured left scaphoid bone, and it appears he is closing in on a return sometime ahead of the all-star break.
The worst news out of a jam-packed weekend in Chicago that involved two extra-inning losses and a questionable decision by Tony La Russa was Michael Kopech leaving his start with right knee discomfort.
Kopech appeared to tweak his knee after slipping during his follow-through on the 13th pitch of the game and couldn’t complete a warm-up pitch before walking off.
La Russa, however, didn’t rule him out from making his next start and Kopech said he has some soreness to address but his MRI came back “structurally sound,” according to The Athletic’s James Fegan.
Yasmani Grandal suffered a left hamstring strain in Saturday’s game and was shelved on Sunday. Grandal is already progressing, according to La Russa, and they don’t plan on placing him on the IL but have made no decisions on when he will return, according to LaMond Pope of Chicago Tribune.
The Cardinals’ 26-year-old ace is scheduled to make a AAA rehab start this week with a 75-pitch limit as he works his way back from an offseason shoulder injury. Flaherty spoke to reporters on Sunday and noted that this is the best he’s felt in years, according to MLB.com’s Katie Woo.
The ProBaseballDocs explained during the offseason that while Flaherty will be able to return this season he is unlikely to be as effective as in recent years.
Manager Oliver Marmol said that they could activate Flaherty early next week to pitch during a four-game series against the Brewers, according to Rick Hummel of St. Louis Dispatch.
Among the numbered injuries to big-name starters this week is Marlins’ ace Pablo López. The breakout 26-year-old righty left Friday’s start in the fifth inning after a line drive ricocheted off of his right wrist.
López was diagnosed with a wrist contusion after x-rays came back negative and his next start is scheduled for Wednesday against the red-hot Phillies.
Taylor Ward has been out since June 3 with a hamstring injury but Angels’ head athletic trainer Mike Frostad said he is hopeful the leadoff hitter will be able to return when his 10-day minimum placement ends Tuesday.
Los Angeles suffered through a brutal 14-game losing streak that ended on Thursday night, and Ward’s fire-starting action will be much needed to renegotiate the terms of the Angels’ season.
Ward, strangely, is in the middle of a streak of his own: the Angels have lost the last 13 games he’s started in, stretching back to May 16. He suffered two separate injuries during that time.
