Before news of Lance Lynn's right knee surgery broke on Sunday, the White Sox had already lost reliever Garrett Crochet for likely the entire 2022 season as will undergo Tommy John surgery. Crochet, a lanky 22-year-old southpaw and one of Chicago's brightest young stars, is set to meet famed Dr. James Andrews later this week after feeling a pop in his left arm last Thursday. He left his appearance against the Reds in the 8th inning after attempting to throw a pitch “just to… make sure” and feeling sharp pain in the elbow. White Sox brass said they are optimistic they will have Crochet back for the 2023 season. The former No. 11 overall pick was productive in his rookie season, posting a 2.82 ERA with 65 strikeouts across 54.1 innings, just over an inning per 54 appearances. Crochet was just as dominant in the playoffs, allowing 0 runs and 5 hits with 6 strikeouts in 4 appearances. Many recent pitchers, including Stephen Strasburg, Jacob deGrom, Carlos Carrasco, and Walker Buehler, have had the start of their careers derailed by Tommy John and gone on to have successful stints in the majors.
