Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk revealed Tuesday that he suffered a broken leg, but upon reviewing his limited X-rays he appears to be dealing with much more than a broken leg.By limited X-rays Hawk himself posted, he suffered a mid-shaft transverse, displaced femur fracture as well as a fractured hip, said Dr. David Chao, who has performed a knee arthroscopy on Hawk in the past. The limited images show a retro grade femoral locked nail and multiple cannulated screws for the femoral neck hip fracture, Chao said. Video that Hawk posted also showed him on crutches and standing with very limited weight on the injured leg.Hawk indicated that he was able to make it back from an elbow fracture 20 years ago, but this will be much harder for the 53-year-old.Even if he were younger, this is quite a bit more severe than his elbow injury. However, the hope and expectation is he can return to skate.Hawk has said that he won't stop skating until he's physically unable and that the latest injury will be the biggest test of that creed.I have no doubt that Tony will be back, but this is going to be a big deal for him, Chao said. The irony is the injury happened a day before the trailer was released for an upcoming documentary on Hawk, who was born and raised in Carlsbad, CA.The documentary, titled Until the Wheels Fall Off, premieres April 5 on HBO.The latest injury certainly represents a significant wheel falling off, but the hope and expectation is the skating legend has not done his last trick.
