2023 NFL Draft: Here's Where Tyree Wilson is at in His Foot Fracture Recovery

Top edge rusher Tyree Wilson will not participate in mobility drills at the NFL Draft Combine while recovering from a right foot fracture he sustained in early November.

Based on video of the injury, Wilson is recovering from a likely Jones fracture and had a screw inserted in his foot during the surgery in late November, according to the Pro Football Docs.

Fifth metatarsal fractures – also known as Jones fractures – typically carry a recovery timeline of three to four months.

The unique Texas Tech talent reportedly began his ramp up process two weeks ago, which puts his recovery right on track, according to the Pro Football Docs. Barring a setback, he should be ready to participate fully at Texas Tech’s pro day on March 29.

His medical examination will be crucial at the combine because teams will want to see proper healing. Lack of blood flow can be a problem for Jones fractures and about 15% need a second surgery to promote healing.

As long as the imaging is clear, there should be little worry for teams, according to the Pro Football Docs. If the imaging does not show adequate healing, he will still be drafted but may drop a half round or so.

Also, there is a slightly increased risk of a similar injury to his other foot because it is a wear-and-tear injury and weakness was already present in his right foot.

Despite his continuing recovery and that increased risk, Wilson is a unique edge rushing talent that teams will have a tough time passing on.

Last season, he racked up 7 sacks and 14 tackles for a loss in 10 games for the Red Raiders. He finished the year with 61 combined tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

In 2021 he had nearly identical numbers, with 7 sacks and 13.5 tackles for a loss in 13 games.
